PRESS RELEASE -31Aug 2021 -for immediate use
The British Alpaca Society is extremely disappointed by the actions of APHA today
BAS is very concerned for the stress caused to Geronimo and his owner, Helen MacDonald. It is the responsibility of APHA to ensure good animal welfare when they are in control of Geronimo up to, and including, the point of his slaughter.
The BAS has sympathy for Helen MacDonald and the exceedingly difficult circumstances that have happened today. The loss of any alpaca, for a dedicated owner, is always a upsetting experience.
BAS have consistently made requests to Defra / APHA to allow further testing of Geronimo to better understand his bTB status, but these have been denied. There is still a chance to learn.
Post-mortem examination is vital to improve learning in this case and BAS implore AHPA to carry out a thorough post-mortem examination to maximise learning. Given the lack of trust between Ms MacDonald and APHA BAS request an independent qualified observer for all post-mortem work to ensure confidence in any results.
