TB Information

Pretending TB isn't an issue, or worse still intentionally covering up the presence of TB, will risk the health of all of our alpacas, and damage the future of the alpaca in the UK.

If you are worried that one of your alpacas may have TB, or one of your alpacas has been diagnosed with TB, the BAS is here to offer help and support.

Of course  you must consult your vet in the first instance.

For details of camelid vets, see www.camelidvets.org

If you need immediate help and support at any time call the BAS (01392 437788) or Graham Reed (07802 263589).
It is important that we know the extent of the problem. We are here to help and support you, and will treat your information sensitively. TB is a notifiable disease and you have a legal and moral duty to report it.
In conjunction with British Camelids Ltd, the BAS has set up a ring-fenced fund for research into bTB in camelids. This is in addition to the funding already given to Defra/VLA for a research project to try to validate a number of bTB tests in camelids.
If you would like to support this vital work, you can make your donation on the justgiving website: www.justgiving.com/camelids

Wales
The Welsh Assembly Government has decided that all of Wales will require annual TB testing in 2010. Future testing frequencies from 2011 onwards will be decided following further analysis of the Health Check Wales results. The Welsh Assembly Government will not be returning to calculating TB testing frequencies on a parish level. As a consequence of annual testing, all cattle keepers in Wales will have to comply with Pre-Movement Testing requirements on cattle movements from 1 January 2010.
