Press Release Concerning Ms Helen Macdonald & Geronimo

Please find below a press release from British Camelids Ltd

The council of British Camelids Ltd along with the British Llama Society (BLS) and the British Alpaca Society (BAS) wish to endorse and support the efforts of Ms Helen MacDonald in seeking a Judicial Review of her case regarding her alpaca (Geronimo) and DEFRA. In addition the council of British Camelids Ltd. and the board of the British Llama Society agree with, and endorse, the letters sent by the British Alpaca Society to Mr George Eustice MP on the 3rd April 2018 and the 16th July 2018 and which to date there has been no response.

In summary those concerns were in relation to the validity and indeed prejudicial effects that the so called “priming” can have in respect of test results. This issue has been acknowledged by both members of DEFRA and also the Swedish Government. We believe there is no scientific validation for such practise we agree with the request for DEFRA to produce more evidence to support this practise and find it notable that as yet none has been forthcoming.

We support Ms MacDonald’s efforts in seeking a Judicial Review. DEFRA, by ignoring its own protocols and being unwilling to share relevant data to allow greater understanding of bTB in camelids, erodes the trust and will of our members to engage in voluntary testing; something which is crucial in managing the spread of this disease.

Copies of the letters mentioned are available.

The Societies are committed to the health and welfare of camelids in the UK and in giving camelid owners reliable tools in which to identify and manage disease.
