The British Alpaca Society Advanced Alpaca Assessment Course offers the following value to members:

-  an in depth analysis of fleece traits and heritability.

- a full and thorough overview of conformational traits and the way they impact on reproduction, growth and general fecundity.

- advanced visual and hands on assessment techniques for alpaca selection for sale, purchase, showing and breeding.

- the ability to learn to orally compare and critique alpacas, in particular herd sires.

- an opportunity to exchange ideas and techniques with other like minded breeders.

- a fun couple of days fully immersed in the latest and most in depth alpaca assessment and breeding techniques.

This courses builds on the Alpaca Assessment (Foundation) course. It would be helpful if delegates had already attended this course but those with a minimum of two years alpaca ownership will find the course of benefit. Content will be mainly practical and will be approximately one-third classroom, two-thirds hands-on practical. It will cover both suri and huacaya.

This course is not part of the judge training programme and does not include formal oral reasoning.

Course Content

  •     Review of basic alpaca assessment
  •     Conformational faults – more detail on limb angulation, dentition and other issues
  •     Practical on confirmation including testicles
  •     Advanced fleece assessment:

               - Primary and secondary follicles
               - Elite fleece
               - Detailed examination of fleece qualities – density, fineness, etc
               - Micron assessment
               - Understanding fleece testing and histogram
               - Relationship between characteristics

  •     Hands-on shorn fleece assessment including comparisons


  •     Hands-on alpaca assessments – putting it all together

              - In groups and individually
              - Making choices from groups of alpacas

  •     Stud assessment

             - Heritability
             - Considerations specific to choosing a stud
